Why are firebreaks important?

The real purpose of a firebreak is to have a place where a back-burn fire can be started. This is the best way to fight a wildfire. This back-burn action must only be done under the control of an experienced firefighter, with enough FPA members, farmers, other agencies and firefighters as support.

  • It is the responsibility of each landowner to know the Veld and Forest Fire Act and comply therewith;
  • Work together and cooperate to make firebreaks;
  • Make firebreaks;
  • Train your personnel;
  • Ensure that you have firefighting equipment in good working order;
  • Be ready to prevent fires on your property and to prevent the spread of fires;
  • Have designated officers in each area, who are responsible for fire prevention, mitigation & firefighting;
  • State Depts., SOEs and Municipalities MUST join FPAs and pay statutory fees.
