Why are firebreaks important?
The real purpose of a firebreak is to have a place where a back-burn fire can be started. This is the best way to fight a wildfire. This back-burn action must only be done under the control of an experienced firefighter, with enough FPA members, farmers, other agencies and firefighters as support.
- It is the responsibility of each landowner to know the Veld and Forest Fire Act and comply therewith;
- Work together and cooperate to make firebreaks;
- Make firebreaks;
- Train your personnel;
- Ensure that you have firefighting equipment in good working order;
- Be ready to prevent fires on your property and to prevent the spread of fires;
- Have designated officers in each area, who are responsible for fire prevention, mitigation & firefighting;
- State Depts., SOEs and Municipalities MUST join FPAs and pay statutory fees.
